What are Dietary Supplements?
Dietary Supplements (also known as biological active supplements - BAS) are beneficial preparations created based on natural materials of plant, animal, or mineral origin. These preparations are not medicines, therefore they are classified as food supplements. The purpose of dietary supplements is to provide the human body with necessary substances and vitamins. These supplements help people boost their immunity and increase the amount of nutrients in their diet without having to increase the quantity of food or its caloric content.
Types of Biological Supplements
A unified classification of biologically active substances is impossible, as opinions on categorizing each type vary greatly between different countries. One country might classify dietary supplements as food additives, another as complementary medicines, and a third as specialized health maintenance products. Products considered merely food additives in the USA might be classified as complementary medicines, which are prohibited from sale without a prescription from a doctor, in another country. India and China have special databases that control all non-traditional medicine, which includes substances containing unrefined plant materials.
The globalization of the dietary supplement market leads to the increasing spread of these supplements across the planet. This, in turn, fosters growing collaboration between different countries in the production of dietary supplements, which requires the establishment of certain quality standards. Nearly ninety percent of Japan's population consumes biological supplements; this percentage reaches eighty in the USA and sixty-five in Europe.
There are several classifications of dietary supplements. The most common one divides supplements into three groups: eubiotics, nutraceuticals, and parapharmaceuticals.
Nutraceuticals are those dietary supplements used to restore essential substances. These supplements can be divided into subgroups:
Nutraceuticals used to improve the functionality of the gastrointestinal tract and nutrition.
Nutraceuticals whose action is aimed at replenishing missing substances in the body and protecting humans from adverse environmental factors.
Nutraceuticals used to normalize metabolism throughout the body and to cleanse it of all unnecessary or toxic substances.
Parapharmaceuticals are dietary supplements used to enhance the normal activity and functioning of internal organs and organ systems of the human body. They contain vitamins and amino acids, macro- and microelements, and parts of medicinal plants.
Eubiotics are substances that regulate the microflora of the intestines, vagina, and oral cavity.
